Aspire Mentorship was set up by two doctors who are passionate about teaching and nurturing the next generation of doctors and dentists.  

Over time, their enthusiasm and dedication towards helping aspiring students has lead to the development of a strong, like-minded team of mentors, whom all of which are fully qualified doctors or dentists in current practice.

The entire network of mentors includes specialists in all areas of medicine, surgery and dentistry including, but not limited to: oral maxillofacial surgery, gastroenterology, radiology, family medicine and periodontology.  

All mentors share the same passion for teaching and have committed time in their schedules specifically towards helping students who wish to pursue a career in medicine or dentistry. Their goal is your successful development of the characteristics of a Doctor or Dentist and subsequent successful entry into Medical or Dental school.

All mentors are actively in-touch and up-to-date with the current application processes for medical and dental schools in the UK and have full insight into what makes an eligible, successful candidate. They have been there once themselves!

DR ALEX MAN

Dr. Man is a Medical Doctor who specialises in Family Medicine. 

He studied his A-levels in London and graduated with a Degree in BSc Biochemistry with First Class Honours at Queen Mary University of London. He was also awarded the Draper Company Prize for outstanding academic achievement. 

He subsequently spent his postgraduate year working as a biochemical scientist for TATA Global Beverages Ltd and also worked closely with Headway - The Brain Injury Association. After discovering that he enjoyed helping people on an individual level, he made a pivotal decision to change career and decided to pursue a medical career and was accepted to read Medicine (MBBS) at Barts and the London School of Medicine and Dentistry.

After graduating he joined the London Deanery to complete his Junior Doctor training. He worked at Watford General Hospital and The Royal Free Hospital, where he undertook rotations in geriatric medicine, cardiology, breast surgery, respiratory medicine, and urology.

Dr. Man is also a qualified public speaker and trainer, having obtained a BTEC in Training the Trainer (ILM/NCFE) at the College of Public Speaking. He also has interests in areas outside of medicine. He is the CEO of NexusNow Ltd, a multi-professional networking society in London. He is also involved with the development of the British Chinese community and is currently a member of the Chinese Diaspora Emerging Leadership Project, a social enterprise initiative run by Lord Wei of Shoreditch, a member of the House of Lords.     

Dr. Man is passionate about encouraging and helping students to enter the medical and dental professions. His expertise and up-to-date knowledge of the application process has consistently assisted many students in successfully achieving places in medical and dental school.

DR BILLY LEUNG

Dr. Leung is a doctor and trainee surgeon in London.

He studied his A-levels as a boarder at Bedford Modern School and got accepted to read Medicine (MBBS) at Barts and the London School of Medicine and Dentistry. During this time he also completed an Intercalated Science Degree (BSc) in Sports and Exercise Medicine. 

On graduation he joined the London Deanery and completed his Junior Doctor training at Queens Hospital and Colchester Hospital, during which he undertook training rotations in general medicine, general surgery and ENT surgery.

Following this, he took a gap year to teach undergraduate anatomy at King's College London and was subsequently appointed by the University of Oxford as the Lead Anatomy Demonstrator, and Programme Coordinator of the Anatomy Programme. In this time he also completed a Masters Degree (MSc) in Burns, Plastics and Reconstructive Surgery at University College London.

He then went on to commence his surgical training at the Oxford Deanery, undertaking posts in plastic surgery, ENT surgery and oral and maxillofacial surgery. He has attained his Surgical Membership Exam (MRCS – Membership of the Royal College of Surgeons of England) and achieved a Diploma of Head and Neck Surgery (DOHNS) at the Royal College of Surgeons of England.

He is currently reading Dentistry (BDS) in order to gain dual qualifications in Medicine and Dentistry, in order to purse a career in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. During this time he aims to strengthen his teaching portfolio by gaining a Postgraduate Certificate in Medical Education (PGME) and obtain a Fellowship of Higher Education Academy (FHEA). He is also training to become a fully qualified medical illustrator by undertaking a Postgraduate Degree in Medical Art (MAET), he is currently involved in illustrating a medical textbook to make anatomy more accessible to students and doctors.

Overall, Dr. Leung is a very dedicated, experienced and accomplished teacher. As you can see from his testimonials and activities, his enthusiasm for teaching and his dedication to the success of others is exemplary.

Mr SIMON LEUNG 

MBA MMGT PMSM

DIRECTOR 

Mr Leung has a wide range of operational and management experiences. 

He was a former law enforcement officer of Hong Kong for over 35 years and in recognition of his excellent service to Hong Kong society received the Police Meritorious Service Medal (PMSM) in 2011 awarded by the HKSAR government. He retired from the Force in 2012 as a Detective Chief Inspector. In pursuit of academic achievement during his career, he gained a Masters Degree in Management (MMgt) and a Masters Degree of Business Administration (MBA), both awarded by Macquarie University, Australia (2005 and 2007 respectively).

Since his retirement, Mr. Leung has taken up in various positions as an educator. In the period of 2014-2015, he was appointed by the Beijing and Shenzhen mainland police as a Lecturer for the Crisis Management course (Police Negotiation Training) and also appointed as a Senior Consultant for the Beijing Railway Police in the Police Negotiation Training. He was also appointed by the Hong Kong Institute of Technology as a Course Advisor and Lecturer for an undergraduate degree course on Crime Investigation (BSc) run by the Teesside University, UK, where he currently also holds a part-time lectureship on "Understanding Investigation and Terrorism".

Mr. Leung is committed to helping students pursue a career in medicine because his own son is also a doctor. He is fully aware of the challenges of preparing a student for medical school application and is highly supportive of the Mentorship Programme. 


DR KWOK KIT NGAN

DENTIST | SPECIALTY REGISTRAR IN PERIODONTOLOGY

Dr Ngan is a qualified dentist who has completed the Dipolma of Membership of the Faculty of Dental Surgery (MFDS) at the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons in Glasgow.  He is currently specialising in Periodontology at Guy’s Hospital, London.

He studied his A-levels at Chatham Grammar School for Boys, Kent. He then got an offer to study Dentistry at Bart’s and the London School of Medicine and Dentistry. After his graduation in 2009, he completed his dental vocational training in the Kent, Surrey and Sussex Deanery. He then worked under consultant-led care in Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery Department at Kent & Canterbury Hospital. Following this, he gained further experience working in general dental practices across Kent, Essex and London.

He has a strong dedication to Continuing Profession Development and Evidence Based Dentistry. He has previously been published in journals such as the Dental Update.

He is currently a member of the British Society of Periodontology (BSP) and the Society for the Advancement of Anaesthesia in Dentistry (SAAD). He has a special interest in Periodontology (treatment of gum disease and gum problems), implant dentistry and conscious sedation. He has completed a certificate in conscious sedation.

In 2013 he was selected for specialist training in Periodontology at King’s College Dental Institute, London. As part of the training, he is involved in undergraduate teaching of dentistry. He understands the challenges that all prospective dental applicants will face during their application process and therefore will be able to provide sound advice and guidance on application for dentistry.   


DR DAVID TAI

DOCTOR | SPECIALTY REGISTRAR IN GASTROENTEROLOGY

Dr. Tai is a specialist in gastroenterology. He is dedicated to guiding students towards a career in the core medical specialities. If you have already decided what kind of doctor you want to be, then Dr. Tai will be able to help you build your application to reflect your commitments in order to show that you are the right candidate for medicine.

He completed his International Baccalaureate at Sevenoaks School, Kent before training in Medicine at Barts and the London School of Medicine and Dentistry.

He received a first class Bachelor of Science degree in Neuroscience in 2008 and was awarded the Principals Prize for outstanding academic achievement. In 2010 he completed his MBBS with a Distinction in Medical Science. While training in General Medicine, he became a Member of the Royal College of Physicians (London) and became a Specialist Registrar in Gastroenterology in 2014. 

As a training specialist, he sees patients with gastrointestinal and liver diseases, manages acutely unwell patients at the front door and performs gastrointestinal endoscopy.  He has recently rotated as a liver transplant registrar at the Royal Free Hospital in London. He has presented in multiple international conferences and has published in peer reviewed journals in the fields of haematology, neuroscience, neurosurgery and hepatology.

Dr Tai understands the realities of being both a medical student and a doctor. With an intimate understanding of the UK National Health Service (NHS), Dr Tai is strongly positioned to be a dedicated mentor for an aspiring medical student. Failure is not an option.

miss joyce leung

Junior mentor | dental student

Joyce is currently a fourth year student reading Dentistry at King’s College London (KCL), and is expecting to graduate with a BDS degree in 2019.

She is a keen supporter of the overseas student community, where she led the British Chinese Dental Association at KCL, a society aimed towards creating a community for overseas students in her course. Currently, she is involved in publishing an article for the Guys and St Thomas' (GKT) Gazette (a dedicated KCL medical journal) in order to share her own experiences and practical advice to support international students living in the UK.

In terms of her educational background, Joyce received most of her schooling in Hong Kong before transferring to London for higher education. She received a full scholarship to study her IGCSEs at Yew Chung International School before completing her International Baccalaureate (IB) at Li Po Chun United World College.

In her application to dental school, she became one of the top decile scorers in the UKCAT, achieving a score of 2,890 out of 3600 and a Band 2 in the Situational Judgement Test (SJT). She subsequently received offers from both King’s College London and Barts and the London School of Medicine and Dentistry, finally choosing to study at King's.

Overall, Joyce brings to Aspire her enthusiasm for teaching overseas students, detailed knowledge in the UCAS application steps as well as her life experience of being an international student who chose to study dentistry abroad.

Miss lilly liu

Junior mentor | medical student

Lilly is currently a third year medical student studying at King’s College London (KCL) and is hoping to gain a masters degree (MSc) in conjunction with her medical study. She aims to graduate with an MBBS and MSc in 2021. 

She studied A-levels at Aylesbury High School, which was one of the top-ranking grammer schools in the UK. She achieved two A*s (biology and maths) and two As (chemistry and further maths) at A2-level, as well as, a grade A in AS-level psychology. In her application to medical school, she was ranked in the top deciles in the UKCAT entrance exam, achieving 2980 and band 1 in the Situation Judgement Test (SJT). She subsequently gained all four offers from KCL, Cardiff, Southampton and Nottingham. 

She is a currently the vice president of the anatomy society at KCL, which she is involved in organising teaching sessions for medical students. Furthermore, she provides private tutitions in Chemistry for A-level students in her spare time. Lilly also has had experiences with tutoring primary school students at Maths and English.

Overall, Lilly is acedemically outstanding, and has a nuturing personality, which our current students have greatly warmed to. Her close advisor role for our students, on UKCAT exam and interview skills, has proven to be invaluable.
